How we started
Sustainable Information Technology Economics Research Group or popularly known as SuITE (pronounced : Sweet), was formally formed in 2014 as a result of a call for establishment of Research Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka. The two founding members were Dr. Yusri Arshad and Professor Dr. Md Nor Hayati Tahir who was the Dean of FPTT at that time.
SuITE and other research groups under non-Science and Technology CoE were grouped under Centre of Technopreneurship Development (CTeD) which mainly to support the advancement of research and teaching in the Faculty of Technology Management and Technopreneurship (FPTT).
FPTT was established in 2004 and has gone through rapid changes in the faculty. Currently, four academic programs for undergraduates which become FPTT and CTeD main specialised and focused fields include:
- Technology management and innovation
- Technology management and Hi-Tech marketing
- Technopreneurship
- Suppy chain management
What is IT Economics and Information System management?
Center for Information Systems Research in Massachusetts Institute
of Technology, Sloan School of Management published an article on “The
Economics of Information Technology: Explaining the Productivity paradox” in
April 1992.
The central argument is that information technology has
altered the economics of production in favour of differentiated output, and
that our methods of productivity measurement tend to discount the benefits of
greater product variety.
Science, technology and innovation have become key factors
contributing to economic growth in both advanced and developing economies. In
the knowledge economy, information circulates at the international level
through trade in goods and services, direct investment and technology flows,
and the movement of people. Information and communication technologies (ICT)
have been at the heart of economic changes for more than a decade. ICT sector
plays an important role, notably by contributing to rapid technological
progress and productivity growth. Firms use ICTs to organize transnational
networks in response to international competition and the increasing need for
strategic interaction. As a result, multinational firms are a primary vehicle
of the everspreading process of globalization. New technologies and their
implementation in productive activities are changing the economic structure and
contributing to productivity increases in OECD economies. Economic
competitiveness depends on productivity level and in the knowledge economy, ICT
sectors determine the productivity level. As a result , we can say that the
power of economic competitiveness of a country depends on the productivity of
its ICT sector.
A management information system (MIS) is an information system used for decision-making, and for the coordination, control, analysis, and visualization of information in an organization. The study of the management information systems testing people, processes and technology in an organizational context.
Information systems (IS) are formal, sociotechnical, organizational systems designed to
collect, process, store, and distribute information. In a
sociotechnical perspective, information systems are composed by four components: task, people,
structure (or roles), and technology.
